Dance Hawaii Expo Clogging Championships

Clogging General Rules and information:

1. Categories and age divisions will be danced in the order in which they appear in these rules, with Amateur & then Challenge in each Category.

2. When calculating age divisions, add the ages of all members and divide by the number of dancers.   Number is rounded down (ex. 14.9 would dance in the 10 - 14 age division)

3. Deductions of 2 points from the total score will be taken for any of the following:

Less than minimum number of dancers

Exceeding Time Limit for Category

Rules Violation (i.e. body contact in Standing Line)

4. Awards

Amateur Age Champions: (1st, 2nd & 3rd Place in each age division)     Awards

Amateur Category Champions: (highest score in each category)     Awards

Amateur Grand Champion: (Dance off of Amateur Category Champions)     Award

5. Team Divisions:

There will be 2 (two) Divisions of competitions for teams - Amateur and Challenge:

Amateur:        This team division is open to teams never having earned first place in any past clogging competitions.   No more than one challenge dancer is permitted to dance in any Amateur Team Routine.  This will be monitored and disqualification may result.

Challenge: This team division is open to any team, regardless of past winnings.

 

TEAM COMPETITION

TEAM AGE DIVISIONS:

6 & under, 7-9, 10-11, 12-14, 15-18, 19-29, 30 & over.

STANDING LINE (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*     Minimum of five (5) dancers.

*     The dance must start, be performed, and end in the same line. The dance must be choreographed for one but danced by many.

*     May not expand or contract your formation.

*     Precision footwork and body mechanics is required at all times.

*     No progressive dance step or arm movements.

*     No dancer may have body contact with any other member at any time.

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

OPEN LINE (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*     Minimum of five (5) dancers.

*     Dance must be performed in some form of line at all times. You may bend, rotate, pass through and touch the floor. No dancer may have body contact with any other member at any time.

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

PRECISION (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*     Team must have at least eight (8) dancers. This is a couple oriented dance.

*     Dancers must be in step with each other. Precision footwork must be performed.

*     There are no figure requirements, however figures are highly encouraged.

*     Instrumental music is required.

*     Time limit is four (4) minutes.

HOEDOWN (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*    Team must have at least eight (8) dancers. This is a couple oriented dance.

*    Dancers should never be intentionally in step with one another.

*    Freestyle or hoedown footwork should be performed.

*    There are no figure requirements, however figures are highly encouraged.

*    Instrumental music is required.

*    Time limit is four (4) minutes.

EXHIBITION (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*     Minimum of five (5) dancers.

*     Seventy per cent (70%) of the dance steps must be clogging steps.

*     Other types of dance forms are highly encouraged.

*     Routine must include various formations, progressive step changes. Lifts and pull throughs are allowed.

*     Any type of music is permitted.

*     You may not re-dance this routine in any other category.

*     This is not an artistic expression category. Only hand props are allowed.

*     This routine must exhibit elements from more than one clogging category: (i.e. Precision, Standing

*     Line, Moving Line, Hoedown, Artistic Expression).

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

TRADITIONAL LINE (Amateur & Challenge Divisions)

*     Team must have at least 5 dancers - any combo M/F.

*     Figures are not allowed.

*     Footwork should be traditional style steps - drag slide clogging. Line dance is a category whose choreography is for one person, but danced by many, no progressive step changes are allowed. Only your feet may touch the floor.

*     No hand or head choreography. All dancers must face the same direction at the same time. Dance must start from, and end in set line(s); no clogging on or off stage. No dancing as couples; no Rise & Shine or individual freestyle dancing. No trading of lines, twisting of lines, passing through lines, or bending of lines. No rotation, V’s or column formations, or interaction of lines may be done. No body contact is allowed. No moves that appear to be a show or stage production. NO dance lifts, pull throughs, splits, tosses, leaps, cartwheels, or flips.

*     Traditional style music only, with or without vocals.

*     Dance must NOT be called or cued.

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

SMALL TEAM (Challenge Only)

*     Minimum of three (3) dancers.

*     You may not re-dance this routine in any other category.

*     This is a precision category, meaning dancers must be in step.  However, progressive change (domino or ripple effect) with steps and/or hand moves is allowed.

*     Movements may bend, rotate, pass through, split, trade, make multiple figures and formations of any configuration and interaction among dancers is allowed (arm swings, circles, etc)

*     Dance lifts, pull throughs, splits, tosses and leaps are allowed.   No unassisted cartwheels or flips are allowed..

*     Dance must NOT be called or cued.

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

A CAPELLA TEAM (Challenge Only)

AGE DIVISIONS: 9 & under, 10 - 14, 15 - 20, 21 - older

*     Minimum of Five (5) dancers, any mix m/f.

*     No costume requirements.

*     Judges will not see dancers -- only hear them.  Judging based solely on rhythm, sound, variety of sounds and clarity.

*     Any percussive dance steps may be used.    Hand claps, yells and non step percussion is not allowed.  All sounds must be produced by the feet.

*     Progressive step changes ARE allowed.   One dancer may start a step and have others join in.

*     Time limit is three (3) minutes.

 

DUO/DUET COMPETITION

DUO/DUET/SHOW DUO/DUET AGE DIVISIONS:

8 & under, 9-11, 12-14, 15-18, 19-25, 26 & over

DUO / DUET : ( NOTICE THE CHANGE IN TIME LIMIT)

*     Duo means dancers are of the same sex.

*     Duet means one male and one female dancing.

*     Dance must be precision oriented. No rise and shine or acrobatics.

*     Dancers should dance as a couple; hands joined as much as possible and use plenty of arm/couple turns.

*     Dancers must use entire stage showing the ability to move as a unit.

*     Any type of music is allowed.

*     Time limit is one and one half (1 1/2) minutes

SHORT DUO/DUETS

*     Two (2) dancers – any – combination.

*     Judging will be based on dancing as a couple in a line and a rise and shine.

*     Couple interaction is strongly encouraged.

*     Each couple will be given 48 beats at the beginning to rush the judges, 48 beats to rise and shine and 48 beats at the end.

*     Callbacks may be necessary.

*     Festival Director will select the music.

 

SOLO COMPETITION

SOLO – FREESTYLE (AMATEUR AND CHALLENGE)

AMATEUR SOLO AGE DIVISIONS:

6 & under, 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-20, 21 & over

CHALLENGE SOLO AGE DIVISIONS:

6 & under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-21, 22-30, 31-45, 46 & over

Amateur – This solo division is open to dancers who have not won first place

Challenge- This solo division is open to any dancer, regardless of past winnings. It is possible for a dancer at a

competition to dance in both Amateur and Challenge.

*     Judging will be based on dancing in a line, rise and shine and/or moving in a circle.

*     Freestyle is defined as the dancer’s self-expression using any style or combination of styles in performing their art.

*     Dancers may combine drag-slide clogging with buck.

*     Males and females will not compete against each other.

*     The festival director will select music.

*     Callbacks may be necessary.

 

 

Dance Hawaii Expo Xtreme Dance Championships

Xtreme Dance General Rules and information:

X-TREME DANCE AWARDS

   Judging will be based on the adjudication.  Each judge will give a score based on technique, showmanship, choreography, and appearance for a maximum score of 100 points per judge.

In this type of scoring system each dance is judged against a set of standards and is rewarded based on the number of points earned.  The judging system is

Ruby-275-289.9

Emerald-260-274.9

Sapphire-250-259.9

Gem-249.9 and Below

SPECIAL AWARDS/OVERALLS

   1st, 2nd, 3rd will be given in each age group for each division.  Overalls will be given in each age group for each entry division.  We will also give an overall routine of the day that can be from any Entry Division, Age Division and Category.  Awards will also be given to routines displaying outstanding qualities during their performance.  X-treme Dance Entertainment Award is presented to the most entertaining/memorable performance of the competition.  X-treme Dance Studio Excel Award-$150.00 gift certificate toward 2006 X-treme Dance Nationals is given with the most participates in group categories at a regional event.

    Winning teams at the Hawaii Xtreme Dance Competition qualify to dance at the Xtreme At X-treme Dance National Championships, the highest scoring group routine will win a complete sound system.  This package includes a remote controlled Califone Tape and CD player, Fender 250 Passport portable sound system with speaker stand.  Complete package value is over $2500.00.

XTREME DANCE CATEGORIES OFFERED

JAZZ-  Should contain primarily jazz technique.

LYRICAL-  Routine should utilize contemporary style to show extension, balance as well as showing interpretation of the music.

BALLET-  Should contain ballet technique while incorporating classical movements.

TAP-  Should contain primarily tap technique.

ACROBATIC-  Routine should contain control movements and flexibility.  (At least one (1) tumbling pass is encouraged.)

HIP HOP-  Street style of dance that includes hip-hop and “FUNK” choreography.

POINTE-  Should contain pointe technique while incorporating classical movements

MODERN-   Abstract modern dance style. Must utilize contract and release movements.

OPEN-  A routine utilizing a combination of dance styles.

MUSICAL THEATRE-  Routine featuring any style of dance from any Broadway, Movie, or Television show.

POM/CHEER DANCE-  A dance team style (pom-pon are optional) and must incorporate a chant.

CLOGGING LINE-  A routine consisting of clogging technique performed in some form of line at all times.  All performers must be doing the same thing at the same time, no formations, ripples or progressive step changes allowed.

CLOGGING EXHIBITION-  A routine consisting of any formations or couple dancing while using clogging technique and steps.  Props may be used. 

CLOGGING FREESTYLE SOLO:  Dancer will freestyle clog in a line, rise-and-shine, and circle as a individual.  Dancer will compete in the appropriate age division males against females (unless registration warrants separation).

CHARACTER-  A routine portraying any recognizable character.  All dance forms are acceptable.

PRODUCTION-  A routine containing at least 12 dancers incorporating any style(s) of dance that portrays a theme or storyline throughout.

SONG & DANCE-  Routine should contain vocal exhibition and any style of dance.

SPORTWEAR MODELING-  Contestant will perform a front or back “T” formation and large circle for the judges.  (No swim suits are allowed)

PHOTOGENIC-  Pictures must be either 5X7 or 8X10 and can be either black/white or in color.

Small Group, Large & Super Group-4 Minutes

MISS & MISTER X-TREME TITLE COMPETITION

 

Petite Mr./Miss X-treme Dance-soloist age 8 & Under

Junior Mr./Miss X-treme Dance-soloist age 9-12

Teen Mr./Miss X-treme Dance-soloist 13-15

Senior Mr./Miss X-treme Dance-soloist 16-25

Adult Mr./Miss X-treme Dance-soloist 26 & Over

 

REGIONAL EVENTS-

At each regional event contestants will be judged on photogenic (15%) and solo routine of any style dance (85%).  In each age division we will be award a Queen, runners up, and participation awards for each contestant.  The Queen and 1st Runner Up will be invited to compete for Titles on the national level.  In the event of the Queen and/or 1st Runner Up is not able to attend the national dance an invitation will be extended to the next runner up in line.  Contestants are invited to compete at Nationals for awards, prizes and cash.

 

NATIONAL DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Contestants will be judged on

  • Photogenic (10%)- Pictures must be either 5X7 or 8X10 and can be either black/white or in color. 

  • On-stage introduction (10%)-Contestants will perform a front or back “T” formation in your choice of formal or Sunday attire.

  • Interview with the judges (30%)

  • Solo routine of a dance style of your choice. (50%)

At the national event we will also award an Overall National Mr./Miss Xtreme Dance.
